On Tagore’s Birth Anniversary, Sheena Chohan Reflects on the Literary Master’s Progressive Female Characters That Shaped Her Early Career

On the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, actress Sheena Chohan is revisiting one of the most defining artistic chapters of her career — her powerful performances in Mukti and Patralekha, two films inspired by Tagore’s timeless literary universe and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

Sheena Chohan shares a glimpse from Rabindranath Tagore’s Mukti:

Both films explored deeply layered female narratives long before women-led storytelling became a cinematic movement. In Mukti, Sheena portrayed Bela, Tagore’s daughter, in an emotionally rich story inspired by the poet’s writings and personal world. In Patralekha, she embodied a woman’s quiet yet profound rebellion against the emotional limitations of marriage — a woman who refuses to remain confined to letters and poetry as the only means of sustaining love, instead discovering her own identity, strength and freedom.

Preparing for these roles became an immersive artistic journey for Sheena, who delved deeply into Tagore’s poetry, literature, philosophy and emotional landscapes to authentically inhabit these complex women.

Reflecting on the experience, Sheena shares,
“Working on Tagore’s world at the very beginning of my career transformed me as an actor. I remember studying his poetry, his silences, the emotional depth of his women characters and the rhythm of his writing — not just to perform the role, but to truly understand the soul behind the words. Both Mukti and Patralekha demanded immense internal work, restraint and emotional truth.”

She further adds,
“What stayed with me most was how progressive and emotionally layered Tagore’s women were. They had strength, individuality, longing, rebellion and grace. Those films shaped my foundation as an actor and deeply connected me to meaningful cinema and literature.”

These films remain a significant milestone in Sheena Chohan’s journey, laying the foundation for her identity as a performance-driven actor deeply drawn to literary, transformative and women-led storytelling.

Following Mukti and Patralekha, Sheena Chohan went on to headline 15 acclaimed national and international independent films, cementing her place as a powerhouse performer celebrated for nuanced portrayals and compelling women-centric narratives.
