At the grand audio launch of Thug Life in Chennai, veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam delivered a touching tribute to his longtime collaborator and musical genius, A.R. Rahman. In a heartfelt moment that captured the spirit of their decades-long partnership, Ratnam publicly acknowledged Rahman’s extraordinary contribution to his cinematic storytelling.

“Thank you, Rahman. You make my film alive. Thank you very much,” Ratnam said with visible emotion, drawing applause from an auditorium filled with fans, media, and film industry dignitaries. The filmmaker recounted a recent conversation with Rahman, where he shared the growing challenge of including full-length songs in modern films, given shorter attention spans and shifting narrative styles.

But Rahman’s response was both unexpected and deeply characteristic of the maestro’s intuitive artistry. “He quietly listened, and then increased the number of songs from five to nine,” Ratnam revealed, prompting a wave of admiration from the audience. “Thank you, Rahman. Thank you very much. You make my film come alive.”

Their creative journey, which began with the iconic Roja in 1992, has gifted Indian cinema with unforgettable soundtracks across films like Bombay, Dil Se, Guru, and the epic Ponniyin Selvan. What unfolded on stage was not just a moment of gratitude, but a powerful reflection of the enduring bond between a director and a composer who trust each other’s instincts implicitly.

In an era where filmmakers often trim songs to accommodate faster-paced storytelling, Mani Ratnam and A.R. Rahman’s decision to enrich Thug Life with more music is both courageous and visionary. It reaffirms the belief that music, when created with soul and seamlessly woven into narrative, does more than complement a film — it transforms it.

Backed by powerhouse producers Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, R. Mahendran, and Siva Ananth, Thug Life features a stellar ensemble cast. Kamal Haasan leads the film as Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, joined by Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf.

With Mani Ratnam’s visionary direction and Rahman’s evocative score, Thug Life is set for a grand worldwide theatrical release on June 5, 2025 — promising a cinematic experience as soulful as it is spectacular.
