National, March 6, 2026: In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, the critically acclaimed Manipuri film Boong—the first Indian film to win a BAFTA Award in the Best Children’s and Family Film category—is set to return to theatres across India on March 6, 2026. The film, produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, will be re-released in select cities by PVR INOX Limited, the country’s largest cinema exhibitor.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film first premiered internationally at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival before embarking on a successful journey across several global film festivals. Its remarkable run culminated in a historic victory at the BAFTA Awards, making Boong the first Indian film ever to win in the Best Children’s and Family Film category.

A Heartfelt Story Rooted in Innocence and Family

Boong tells the touching story of a young boy who dreams of surprising his mother with the most meaningful gift he can imagine. In his innocence, the boy believes that bringing back his absent father would be the greatest present for her. Determined to reunite his family, Boong sets out on a journey to find his father.

However, what begins as a simple quest gradually unfolds into a deeply emotional journey that reshapes the boy’s understanding of family, love, and loss. As he searches for answers, Boong’s world begins to unravel, revealing truths that ultimately lead to an unexpected and poignant conclusion.

The film’s narrative, deeply rooted in the cultural and emotional landscape of Manipur, blends innocence, resilience, and social reality—making it both universally relatable and uniquely regional.

Director Lakshmipriya Devi Reflects on the Film’s Journey

Speaking about the film’s re-release and its emotional significance, director Lakshmipriya Devi described Boong as an intensely personal project.

“Boong is my bittersweet memory of Manipur. From the writing stage up until now, as we stand on the cusp of a re-release, it has been a deeply personal journey,” she said. “Winning the BAFTA was and still is surreal; even memory loss wouldn’t make me forget that moment. I’m truly happy that Boong is returning to cinemas. Manipur is meant to be experienced on the big screen, and I hope people get the chance to watch it in theatres this time.”

PVR INOX Champions Diverse Cinema

According to Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX Limited, the decision to bring Boong back to theatres reflects the company’s commitment to supporting diverse cinematic voices.

“It’s a privilege to re-release Boong in India—a film that has not only earned international acclaim but also created history with its BAFTA win,” she said. “We initially released the film in a limited run last September. At PVR INOX, we remain committed to championing unique stories and voices. This re-release gives audiences across India the opportunity to discover and celebrate this remarkable film in the immersive theatrical environment.”

A Global Success Story for Indian Regional Cinema

Produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, Boong stands as a significant achievement for Indian regional cinema on the global stage. Its international recognition highlights the growing influence of Indian storytelling beyond mainstream Hindi cinema.

The film’s theatrical re-release in India is being handled by distributor Anil Thadani through AA Films Pvt. Ltd. and will open in select cinemas nationwide.

Audiences can catch the BAFTA-winning film on the big screen starting March 6, 2026, with booking details and theatre listings to be announced soon on the official PVR INOX app, website, and social media platforms.
